What is Wrong With Indian Cinema?

No-1: Gentlemen, I seek your permission to speak first and open the discussion not because that I am No-1. Nor does it imply that we should follow the clockwise system of 1, 2, 3 etc. It also does not imply that I presume to be superior to all of you in any way not that I want to become a coordinator or chairman to conduct the group discussion. Actually we need none. I have volunteered to speak first only because I feel doing so. The topic “what is wrong with Indian Cinema?” is complex, controversial and yet very interesting and absorbing.

No-5: Yes, my friend No-1. We understand and appreciate your sentiments and thank you for to volunteering to take the floor first and open the discussion, yet may please proceed further with your speech and discussion.

No-1: Thank you No-5 and the rest of my friends and fellow contestants for allowing me to begin the discussion. Indian cinema is now over one hundred years old and during this period it has made many peaks and troughs. There have been moments of triumph and glory and also times of slump and gloom. It began as a new instrument of entertainment in a silent form. Then there were produced soundless and dumb short films. The first indigenous film was made in 1993 by D.G Phalkey and it was titled Raja Harischandra. Gradually film production turned into an organized industry and with the production of Alam Ara in 1931 by Ardeshir Irani dawaned a new era of Indian cinema and many film companies and studios were established. Alam Ara was the first talkie film. During those days many regional talkie films were also produced. Every regional cinema had its own actors, actress and directors. Then films, multi stars big budget films, short documentary type films and new wave cinema films. Many of Indian films suffer from a number of defects and shortcomings. There is too much emphasis of entertainment, songs, dances, bizarre scenes and characters are typecast.  The stories are often repetitions and so dull and boring. There is a lack of credible characters and they suffer from unpredictability of human behavior. Consequently, they do not create confidence in the viewers. It does not mean that there are no bright. Glorious and praise worthy films. There they are but their number is few and far between. They can be easily counted and remembered.

No-6: There is often a controversy on whether a film is for entertainment and not for education. Some believe that films and cinema are meant only for entertainment and not for education. Some believe that films and cinema in India began only as an instrument of entertainment. People went and still go to cinema and theatres only to entertain themselves and forget stress, strain and worries. It provided them a release and escapes from a routine and burdensome life and still does so. They feel that a cinema house or a theatre should not be turned into a school or a college. They believe in art for art’s sake and not for life or any other purpose. They believe that it is a cheap and interesting form of entertainment and pastime and as such. It has nothing to do with reformation, renaissance, patriotism, social morals, education and improvement of the society ethically. They believe that it is an art form meant only for amusement and entertainment having the elements of an interesting story, dance, song, excitement, comedy and melody and drama etc.
